Background

Wodify, a leading fitness management platform, serves over 4,500 gyms worldwide, providing tools for class scheduling, performance tracking, and member management. Recognizing the challenges gym owners face in developing effective and personalized workout programs, I embarked on a project to design an AI-driven programming feature within the Wodify application. This feature aims to assist gym owners in creating customized workout plans tailored to their specific needs and resources.

Problem

Gym owners typically have three options for programming workouts:

  1. Self-Programming: Crafting their own workouts, which is time-consuming and demands a high level of expertise.

  2. Hiring External Programmers: Employing professionals to design programs, often leading to high costs and potential inconsistencies in workout quality.

  3. Purchasing Affiliate Programming: Subscribing to standardized programs from providers like Mayhem Affiliate or NCFIT Collective. While convenient, these programs can be expensive and may not align perfectly with the unique needs of each gym.

These options often result in financial strain, inefficient use of time, and programs that may not fully cater to the specific requirements of individual gyms.

Goals

The primary objectives of the AI-driven programming feature are:

  • Customization: Enable gym owners to generate workout programs tailored to their equipment inventory, class sizes, and member capabilities.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Provide an affordable alternative to expensive affiliate programming and external programmers.

  • Efficiency: Streamline the programming process, allowing gym owners to focus more on member engagement and gym operations.

  • Member Satisfaction: Deliver varied and appropriate workouts to enhance member experience and retention.

Research findings

To ensure the feature’s relevance and effectiveness, I conducted interviews with two gym owners: owner using affiliate programming and owner who did self-programming. These insights highlighted the need for a solution that offers both customization and affordability, reinforcing the potential impact of the proposed AI-driven programming feature.

Owner Using Affiliate Programming

This owner subscribes to a well-known affiliate program, appreciating the convenience but expressing concerns over the high monthly costs and occasional misalignment with members’ skill levels.

Owner Self-Programming

This owner creates workouts independently due to the prohibitive costs of hiring external programmers. Challenges include the significant time investment required and difficulties in designing comprehensive programs that address all fitness domains.

Ideation & Sketches

Based on conversations with the gym owners I interviewed, I compiled a comprehensive list of requirements for the feature. This included identifying essential “must-have” functionalities as well as “nice-to-have” options that could enhance the AI in future iterations. To visualize the concept, I created wireframes illustrating a basic design for the feature and selected a color palette consistent with the existing application branding.

Designs & Solutions

Over the course of this project, I designed several screens with detailed mockups to present to the client, showcasing the user flow and functionality of the proposed feature.

the workflow begins by prompting the gym owner to select their available equipment, using branded icons and labels for each piece to ensure ease of use. next, the application allows the owner to choose preferred workout types through a set of checkboxes. finally, it provides an option to specify the skill level for which the AI should tailor the workouts, ensuring the programming aligns with the gym’s unique member base.
